Senate Bill 1067 sponsored by Arizona State Senator T.J. Shope, was signed into law on April 1, 2024. 

The bill expands the state’s legal definition of child abuse to include “ physical injury or serious emotional damage of a child caused by an employee of a child welfare agency.”

The bill also requires Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) hotline workers to “prepare a report if the identity of the person who is suspected of abuse is an employee of a child welfare agency.” 

Shope represents Arizona as State Senator of District 16, where he is running for re-election in 2024. He previously served in the State House of Representatives, serving district 8. 

He received his Bachelor's degree from Arizona State University. Shope, aged 38, is a native of Florence, Arizona.
