The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has issued a warning to the public about a text message scam demanding payment for toll roads. ADOT clarified that it does not contact individuals via text message regarding tolls because the state highway system does not have toll roads.

ADOT pointed out multiple indicators of the scam, such as the text using "AZDOT" instead of the correct "ADOT" and originating from an international phone number. Additionally, the linked website address seems suspicious as it extends beyond azdot.gov, suggesting it might not be legitimate. The use of broken English phrases like "Now Payment" in the message further raises red flags.

According to ADOT, this type of scam resembles what the Federal Bureau of Investigation classifies as "smishing." Smishing involves cybercriminals attempting to defraud individuals by sending fake text messages. In this particular scam, road tolls are used as a fraudulent pretext to solicit money.

"Smishing attempts use social engineering to prey upon individuals' fears and gain financially from deceptive practices," states ADOT.

Individuals who receive such messages are advised not to respond or provide any personal information. It is recommended that they report these scam attempts to appropriate authorities.
