With the deadline for filing 2024 individual tax returns set for April 15, 2025, taxpayers have one month left to prepare. The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) advises electronic filing and direct deposit to avoid delays associated with paper filings.
"E-file is more secure and efficient," says ADOR, noting that refunds can be received up to eight times faster compared to paper returns. For those who prefer traditional methods, fillable forms are available online at https://azdor.gov/forms/individual. However, ADOR warns of potential delays due to processing over 80,000 paper returns in the last month of tax season.
After submitting a return, taxpayers can choose direct deposit regardless of the filing method. In case a bank account rejects the deposit, ADOR will issue a paper check. Taxpayers can also track their refund status using the "Where’s My Refund?" link but should wait ten weeks before contacting the department.
Several free tax preparation assistance programs are available for eligible individuals:
- Direct File allows Arizonans to file state and federal returns without charge.
- The Arizona Free File Alliance offers a program for those meeting specific criteria.
- AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program provides free support for individuals aged 50 and older.
- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) helps those earning $67,000 or less and others needing assistance.
Around half of all taxpayers file within the final month of tax season. Those requiring additional time can submit Form 204 by April 15 to request an extension; however, this does not extend the payment deadline. If an IRS extension has already been granted, no separate state request is necessary—just indicate it on the return.
