HopeHealth and the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce held a grand opening for the Streater Community Center on February 27. The event, which included food, drinks, and networking opportunities, aimed to introduce attendees to HopeHealth’s community outreach services.
The Streater Community Center is located at 301 N. Dargan Street. It has a significant African American history dating back to 1904. The center aims to enhance community engagement and reduce barriers to care by making programs more accessible for underserved groups such as seniors, veterans, and Black men.
Carl Humphries, CEO of HopeHealth, spoke about the building's legacy and future during the event. He stated, “HopeHealth was given the opportunity to purchase the building in 2018 and quickly decided to honor its rich history through a restoration and renovation project with financial support from the great state of South Carolina. The Streater Community Center stands as a testament to the vibrant spirit of our community. HopeHealth aims to honor this historic landmark through dynamic engagement, empowerment, and wellness offerings to our community and patients.”
Nearly 20 descendants of the Streaters attended from across the country for this occasion. Elected officials from various levels also participated in showing their support.
