The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) has begun accepting individual income tax returns for the 2024 tax year, marking the start of the state's 2025 electronic tax season. Taxpayers have until April 15, 2025, to file their returns or request an extension, which extends the deadline to October 15, 2025.

ADOR highlights common errors that can delay processing when filing by mail and encourages e-filing as a faster and more secure option. Key recommendations include ensuring all forms are filled out correctly, verifying math calculations, checking personal information accuracy, and signing and dating the return.

Taxpayers are advised to use e-file and direct deposit for quicker refunds. When mailing returns, correct postage is essential, along with sending payments to the appropriate agency—state payments to ADOR and federal payments to the IRS.

Free tax preparation options are available through Free File Software provided by a coalition of tax software companies in partnership with ADOR and the IRS. Direct File is also open for eligible Arizonans to file state and federal returns for free.

For those who prefer paper filing, fillable forms are available but come with limitations such as lack of guidance on form selection and error checking. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program offers assistance to individuals over 50 who cannot afford tax preparation services. Additionally, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides help to low-income individuals.

Common myths about tax filing are addressed by ADOR. For instance, extensions only extend the time to file a return but not the time to pay taxes owed. The distinction between ADOR and IRS responsibilities is clarified as well.

Forms 1099-G and 1099-MISC can be accessed online via www.AZTaxes.gov. Form 1099-MISC reports miscellaneous compensation like rebates subject to federal but not state income tax. Form 1099-G details refunds or credits from state income taxes that may be taxable federally.

Amending returns requires Form 140X submission for any changes from originally filed amounts. This process involves manual review, so additional processing time is needed beyond typical paper return timelines.

Outstanding liabilities may result in refund offsets by ADOR if taxpayers owe money to other agencies or courts. Notices will inform taxpayers of any adjustments made due to these obligations.

Requests for copies of prior Arizona tax returns require completing Form 450 with payment sent by mail or drop-box as email submissions are not accepted.
