At the July 20, meeting, the Queen Creek Town Council discussed options to fill the vacancy of the Mayor’s seat. The discussion acknowledged that having the Vice Mayor perform the mayoral duties has been going well and that the Council was confident in the Vice Mayor continuing to serve in this capacity until an elected Mayor is seated in January.
Council member Benning shared, “Vice Mayor Brown being willing to serve in this capacity provides consistency for the Town and as a Council, we appreciate all of his efforts. During this difficult time, he has stepped up and continued to represent the Town well, as Mayor Barney always had.”
Following the discussion, the Council opted to take no action, which results in the Mayor’s seat remaining vacant through the end of the term, January 2023. As provided under the Town Code and policies and procedures, Vice Mayor Brown will continue to perform the duties as Mayor. This decision will allow the Town Council to continue to conduct all Town business without disruption.
Vice Mayor Brown shared, “I appreciate the confidence my Council colleagues have in my ability to continue fulfilling all the duties of the office in Mayor Barney's absence and will work hard to maintain that trust."
Following the results of the Aug. 2 election, the new Mayor will be seated in January 2023.
Mayor Gail Barney passed away on June 22, 2022. Mayor Barney dedicated his life to service, his family, and the success of the Queen Creek community.
