T.J. Shope, a Republican and Arizona State Senator representing the 16th Senate District, recently addressed issues related to Hispanic representation and journalistic fairness in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).
On April 30, 2026, Shope commented on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the Voting Rights Act, stating: “The fact that I’m one of the three Hispanics representing LD16, all of us Republicans, really negates this argument that Hispanics/Latinos can only win in districts absurdly gerrymandered via racial & ethnic lines. #SCOTUS got today’s Voting Rights Act decision right! Districts”.
Later that day, Shope posted another message featuring emojis and tagging another user: ” @lkentwilson “.
On May 2, 2026, Shope expressed his views on media coverage and highlighted a journalist by name: “All I can ask for in a journalist who’s covering me or has covered me is to be fair, even when it’s something that I may not like reading. @cameron_arcand fits that bill and I’m hoping he lands on his feet real soon.”
Shope was elected to the Arizona State Senate in 2023 to represent the state’s 16th Senate District after replacing former state senator Kelly Townsend.
