The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) has announced that senior Rachel Graham from Lancaster, S.C., has been recognized as the Region 2A Runner of the Year and a 2025 National YoungArts award winner in Writing/Nonfiction. These achievements highlight her commitment to both sports and academics, reflecting the comprehensive excellence encouraged at GSSM.

Rachel serves as captain of the girls’ cross-country team, where she motivates her teammates to excel. Her leadership contributed significantly to the team's third consecutive regional championship under Coach Randell Ewing's guidance. Coach Ewing was also honored as the Girls Cross-Country Region 2A Coach of the Year. He remarked, “Rachel is one of the toughest runners I have ever been associated with,” adding that “she is a take-charge kind of student.”

Discussing her experience in cross-country, Rachel stated, “I always did other sports, but when I started running, I realized this is what I was meant to do. Running is so mental, and with Coach Ewing’s guidance, I find ways to push past my limits.”

In addition to her athletic pursuits, Rachel has shown a strong interest in research and writing. She received recognition as a 2025 National YoungArts award winner in Writing/Nonfiction, which includes a cash prize and opportunities for professional development. At GSSM, she has excelled in advanced research programs focusing on plant science through work in the school's hydroponic research lab and during a summer project at Winthrop University.
