City officials in Maricopa are screening applicants for a chief of police.

Police Chief James Hughes, who resigned in August, will be replaced, according to InMaricopa. The city received 15 applications and is evaluating the candidates with assistance from its recruiting partner, Ralph Anderson and Associates. The deadline to apply was Nov. 14.

"The (hiring) timetable will be based on when we identify the right candidate," Quinn Konold, city spokesman, said. "The recruiter first works to vet the candidates and shares their thoughts with the city. We review all of the information, and when there is a candidate or candidates we would like to get to know better, there will be an in-person interview process."

The salary for the position is $182,401, depending on qualifications, InMaricopa reported. Membership in the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System will be offered. The Maricopa Police Department (MPD) features 92 staff members, including 80 sworn officers, according to the job description. MPD's budget for 2023 is approximately $12 million.

"Senior leadership at MPD continues to maintain its outstanding level of service to the community during this process, and we look forward to sharing an announcement once a selection is made," Konold said.
