The Sunland Gin Road Project is starting to make progress after it encountered some delays and a change in a contractor.

Paving on the southbound lane from Santa Cruz Boulevard to Monaco Boulevard began Oct. 7, according to a story by PinalCentral. Workers also began pouring concrete to finish the southbound lane curb on Oct. 20, Pinal County Public Works Manager Ken White said in the story. Paving of the northbound lane will begin on Nov. 14.

Residents have been driving on an unpaved, dirt road for some time, the story said.

“Obviously, it was a lot of work, we kind of had to backtrack and had to redo the job twice, which isn’t ideal,” said Pinal County Public Works Manager Ken White. “But, with the new contractor, just the fact they were able to do so much within the small time frame has been great. We haven’t had one hiccup, we are really pleased with the job that’s been done so far.”

Sunland Asphalt, the new contractor, has worked to get the project back on track, White said, and the city will work to make sure the public is informed on the progress of the project.

“We send out an update every couple of weeks, and we stay in touch with the Arizona City Chamber of Commerce to let them know what is going on,” he said. “We’ve also been talking to residents who live on the northbound side. We try to scrape their driveways and keep the dirt and mud as limited as possible.”

Even before the project is complete, White said, the city hopes to get traffic flowing.

“The completion date will be the first week of February,” White said. “However, we are hoping to have the whole of it, all of the driveways, all of the business access and all of the side streets, open by mid-January.”
