This past August there were issues with the early voting ballots in Pinal County, and on Oct. 19 an administrative review was presented to the public that showed there were statutory requirements not adhered to regarding the number of ballots, but nothing intentional.
An administrative review was done by outside counsel Brad Nelson, a recent report from ABC 15 said. The review was to find the cause for the errors, the shortage of ballots on the primary election day, and how officials responded to the crisis. Nelson’s review included recommendations for additional staffing and having better communication at the polls. There have already been staff changes, and Nelson said they are “on the right course.”
County Attorney Kent Volkmer told ABC 15 that they are ready for the November elections.
“We believe we are in the best position moving forward to put on a flawless election,” he told ABC 15.
The problems with the ballots occurred under the leadership of Elections Director David Frisk, who was fired in August. Nelson said he attempted to reach Frisk but his emails and voicemails were not responded to, the ABC 15 report said.
District 2 Chair of the Pinal County GOP Kathleen Nowak and Pinal County GOP Vice Chair Belinda Rodriguez attended the presentation and told ABC 15 they were pleased with the direction. Nowak said she has noticed the changes being made and is “very excited about it.” Rodriguez commented on how organized the process has been and is “confident the next election is going to go off smoothly.”
The review can be found on the Pinal County website.
