Reduced Speed Limit on Florence Blvd Set to Help Improve Traffic Safety

Speed is a factor in 31% of all fatal crashes according to a major study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Humanetics. Researchers found that cars traveling at slightly higher speeds along a roadway were enough to increase a driver's risk of severe injury or death. The City of Casa Grande strives to help keep local roads safe for drivers.

Recently, the City undertook its own local study to help mitigate risk along Florence Boulevard between Arizola and Henness Roads. The outcome led the City to update the speed limit along the half-mile stretch to 35 miles per hour (mph). Speed limits exist to help reduce car accidents, save lives and improve road safety. The most common dangers caused by speeding include but are not limited to increased occurrence of rollover accidents, increased distance needed to stop a vehicle safely and reduced driver reaction time. “Speed limits also help keep traffic flowing smoothly by keeping everyone at a consistent pace.” said Mayor Craig McFarland. “The correct speed reduces congestion and helps drivers stay focused rather than distracted by other cars.”

According to the local study, some drivers progressed along Arizola and Henness Roads at 25-mph while others drove at 45-mph. When cars travel at different speeds on the same route, it can lead to accidents. City Deputy Public Works Director, Duane Eitel, said that reducing the speed gap and limit to 35-mph would help make that stretch of road safer for all travelers. “Any significant difference in speed between two vehicles may force one of the drivers to suddenly adjust, perhaps by hitting the brakes or switching lanes,” said Eitel.

“These activities increase the odds of a crash. The new speed limit will help to reduce this risk.”
