The Maricopa City Council recently announced that it will make its decision on the new city mayor at its next council meeting on Aug. 16, according to a press release. Former Mayor Christian Price resigned on June 30.

"Pursuant to the City Code and Arizona Revised Statutes, the current vacancy for the mayor will be filled by appointment by the remaining members of Council," the City Council said in a statement. "On Aug. 16, if City Council determines that Maricopa residents are best served by selecting a member from the current City Council to complete the remainder of the term, they may take action to appoint a current council member to fill such vacancy."

Council member Vincent Manfredi has been serving as Maricopa's acting mayor since Price's resignation, according to inMaricopa.com.

"It has been an honor serving Maricopa as interim mayor," Manfredi said to InMaricopa. “However, I am not interested in completing Christian’s term as mayor. I am eager to get back to what I truly love – serving as a council member where I can have an impact working directly with residents.”

He said he would prefer the next mayor to be someone already serving on the City Council.

"Each member of Maricopa's current City Council brings with them multiple years of experience and three members have previously served as vice mayor," the City Council said in its statement. "City staff looks forward to supporting the new mayor and the excitement they will bring in our collective goal of serving Maricopa residents and creating a premier city in Arizona."
