City of Casa Grande issued the following announcement on Feb. 17.

Deep in the heart of Arizona’s technology and manufacturing corridor, the City of Casa Grande is making good on its commitment to provide energy options that meet resident demand in a reliable, greener and sustainable way while also helping to reduce fossil fuel use. Today, Mayor Craig McFarland hosted Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) and Lucid Motors to launch four electric vehicle (EV) charging plugs, located just west of City Hall (510 E. Florence Blvd). The new stations are available for public use and offer more plug-in locations to both resident and tourist EV drivers.

By replacing gasoline with electricity, EVs cut fossil-fuel use and emissions, which benefit environmental and community health. Greenhouse gas emissions contribute to a host of negative impacts including air pollution, respiratory illnesses (such as asthma), rising temperatures, droughts and increased risk for wildfires. In the updated General Plan for Casa Grande, energy is seeded as a vital infrastructure component of the local economy and way of life. Efficiency, conservation and sustainability have become critical for Casa Grande’s future.

“The City has found a valued partner in APS,” McFarland said, “to help meet our community energy needs. Their team has voluntarily committed to helping install charging stations for electric vehicle drivers in their service territory through the APS Take Charge AZ program of which we are happy to be a part.”

To help drive a cleaner environment and encourage more drivers to adopt electric vehicles, the APS Take Charge AZ program provides businesses, government agencies, non-profits and multifamily communities with free EV-charging equipment, installation and maintenance. These Level 2 chargers can be used by any on-road passenger electric vehicle and provide 10 to 20 miles of range per hour of charge. To date, more than 400 Level 2 charging plugs have been installed through the program.

“Creating a brighter and more sustainable energy future for Arizona will take innovation and collaboration across many sectors and we’re excited to work with the City of Casa Grande to help drive cleaner air quality and protect our environment,” said Jacob Tetlow, APS Executive Vice President of Operations. “Community partnerships and customer programs like Take Charge AZ are an essential part of APS’s commitment to power homes and businesses with 100% clean, carbon-free energy by 2050.”

Lucid Motors played a supportive role today by being first to officially plug-in one of its electric vehicles to a City Hall charging station. The company built its large manufacturing plant in Casa Grande and is the first greenfield dedicated EV factory in North America, producing state-of-the-art electric vehicles for drivers ready to take charge of the road.
