The Florence Town Council met by conference call and declared a local emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Issuing an emergency allows the town to free up and release the money to help during the outbreak and it also lessens the time it'll take to make key decisions, said Town Manager Brent Billingsley.
The emergency response plan was reaffirmed by the emergency declaration. The plan in place makes the town manager the director of the emergency response plan and the center of the meetings. That means that Billingsley may rescind, amend and make decisions based on what is best for the town with the emergency response plan. All decisions must coincide with orders that have been put in place by the mayor of Florence or Arizona's governor.
At this time, all of the town's decisions are just recommendations, said Mayor Tara Walter.
“We’re not making anything enforceable. I want to make sure that is very clear,” she said, reported by Pinal Central.
Walter said the town is working on "honoring individual businesses" and how they are going about conducting day-to-day business during the pandemic.
