South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) marked its official welcome to the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event included SCLS Intake Managing Attorney Thomas Trent, SCLS Executive Director Shunna Jeter, Michael Abbott of the Nemec-Abbott Foundation, business associates, and Chamber Ambassadors.

SCLS is introducing a new Justice Van initiative aimed at providing free civil legal assistance directly to residents of Florence and Darlington counties who face transportation challenges. The launch of the Justice Van was made possible through funding from the Nemec-Abbott Foundation.

The Nemec-Abbott Foundation was established in October 2022 by Kerstin and Mike Abbott. The foundation supports community-focused projects that aim for measurable results in areas such as education, poverty alleviation, and unmet needs within Florence and Darlington counties. The foundation provided funds for both purchasing and equipping the mobile legal services vehicle for SCLS, enabling outreach to communities that are often difficult to reach due to high rates of poverty.

“The Foundation funded the purchase and upfitting of a mobile legal services vehicle for SCLS, directly supporting outreach into hard-to-reach, high-poverty areas,” according to information provided at the event.
