South Carolina has maintained its position at 29th place in the Tax Foundation’s 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index, according to a report released last week. The annual index evaluates states on a range of tax metrics, including corporate taxes, individual income taxes, sales and excise taxes, property and wealth taxes, and unemployment insurance taxes.
The report notes that South Carolina’s corporate tax ranking improved to 8th overall this year. Despite this gain, the state’s overall ranking did not change from the previous year.
Neighboring Southeastern states had varied performances in the index. Florida and Tennessee both ranked within the top ten at 5th and 8th places respectively. North Carolina was placed at 13th, Georgia at 18th, while Alabama was ranked lower at 37th.
“The Index compares states on several key tax metrics including corporate taxes, individual income taxes, sales, use, and excise taxes, property and wealth taxes, and unemployment insurance taxes, and has been relied upon by policymakers and advocates to understand how their state’s tax code stacks up relative to peer states and identify areas for improvement,” according to the Tax Foundation.
