Pinal County announced on April 10 that there are available openings for residents interested in serving on its Boards and Commissions, including the Air Quality Control Hearing Board.
These opportunities allow community members to participate directly in local governance. Serving on a board or commission can influence decisions affecting county operations and public services.
The announcement comes as educational data highlights challenges faced by students in the region. In the 2022-23 school year, 76.3% of Pinal County students in grades three through eight did not pass the mathematics section of the AASA assessment, while 69.7% failed the English section, according to the Arizona Department of Education. High schoolers showed similar trends, with 81% failing mathematics and 73% failing English on the ACT during that same period according to state data.
Recent results from the following year indicate some improvement: In the 2023-24 school year, 17% of high school students passed the mathematics section of the ACT according to education officials, while among third through eighth graders, 23% passed math on the AASA assessment as reported by state sources.
Residents interested in contributing to county efforts—such as addressing these educational challenges—are encouraged to review available positions or visit archived news for more information about past board activities.
