Governor Henry McMaster signed a joint resolution (H. 5261) on Mar. 17 that extends the deadline for alcohol server training in South Carolina to May 1, 2026. The extension follows advocacy from the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association and local restaurants seeking more time to comply with new requirements.
The new law gives hospitality businesses additional time to ensure their staff are properly trained. Under the updated regulation, managers and employees who serve alcohol for on-premises consumption at least ten hours per week must complete mandatory training by the new deadline.
According to the announcement, “This extension to May 1, 2026, reflects our ongoing work at the State House to provide hospitality businesses with a manageable path toward compliance.” The goal of these reforms is to promote responsible service and help address rising insurance costs in the industry.
