The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on March 18 that the eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) off-ramp at Cooper Road in the Southeast Valley will be closed for about 60 days beginning at 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 17. The closure is part of a project to reconstruct the ramp and is expected to last until mid-May.

This closure is necessary for crews working on the Loop 202 widening project between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive. The department said drivers can use alternative exits at McQueen or Gilbert roads while the Cooper Road off-ramp remains closed.

The $200 million Loop 202 Improvement Project aims to add lanes and improve interchanges along an eight-mile stretch of freeway in Chandler and Gilbert. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, this work is intended to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in one of the region’s busiest corridors.

Funding for this project comes in part from Proposition 400, a half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. The initiative supports transportation improvements under the Regional Transportation Plan managed by the Maricopa Association of Governments, which oversees planning for Greater Phoenix.

The department expects that once completed, these upgrades will benefit commuters and local communities by providing safer and more efficient travel options.
