This advisory comes at a time when educational performance in Pinal County has drawn attention. During the 2022-23 school year, a majority of students struggled with standardized tests: 76.3% of students in grades three through eight did not pass the mathematics section of the Arizona’s Academic Standards Assessment (AASA), while high schoolers had an even higher failure rate at 81% on the ACT math section, according to the Arizona Department of Education. In English language arts, similar trends were seen with 69.7% of younger students failing the AASA English section and 73% of high schoolers not passing the ACT English portion, also reported by the Arizona Department of Education.
Recent data from the current academic year shows some improvement. For example, during the 2023-24 school year, about 17% of high schoolers successfully passed the mathematics section of the ACT test in Pinal County as noted by the Arizona Department of Education. Among students in grades three through eight, approximately 23% passed the AASA math section this year according to the same source.
