Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the U.S. senior population is increasing while numbers of children decline. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans 65 and older grew by 13%, as the population under age 18 dropped 1.7%. America’s older adult population has risen significantly since 1920, expanding from 4.9 million to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis found that about half of Americans in this age group, or 28 million people, are likely to require long-term services. The report also determined that more than a third of older adults may eventually need nursing home support.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education nonprofit. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
