The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is inviting public feedback on its proposal to add nine new corridors to the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network. This expansion is part of ADOT’s 2025 plan update and aims to establish or upgrade 21 EV charging station locations across several highways, including State Routes 77, 69, 89A/89, 179, 260, 85, and 287.
Residents can submit their input until Monday, Sept. 8 through online forms at azdot.gov/EVcomments, by email at AZEVPlan@azdot.gov, by phone at 623.695.7411, or by mail to ADOT’s Phoenix office.
The planned network builds on earlier phases that focused on interstate freeways and other major routes. In late 2024, ADOT awarded contracts for the first 18 stations along key interstates such as I-10 and I-17. These stations are expected to be operational in 2026.
According to ADOT, “The EV charging network plan is part of $76.5 million in federal funding Arizona is eligible to receive through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. The program encourages adoption of electric vehicles as viable alternatives to gasoline-powered cars by building a nationwide network of publicly accessible and reliable fast chargers that will reduce drivers’ concerns about EV range.”
Each new location will have a minimum of four direct current fast chargers rated at 150 kilowatts. The chargers will include both SAE North American Charging Standard (NACS or Tesla) and Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs to support different vehicle models. These stations are designed to charge most EVs in under half an hour.
All new charging stations will be privately owned and operated. Federal funds will cover up to 80% of project costs; private developers will contribute at least 20%. No state funds are being used for construction.
