Drivers in Arizona planning to travel on state highways during the Thanksgiving holiday are being advised by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to allow extra time and stay alert due to expected increased traffic. ADOT has announced that there will be no full construction or maintenance closures from Wednesday afternoon, November 26, through Monday morning, December 1.

ADOT officials anticipate heavier and slower traffic on major routes such as Interstate 17 north of Phoenix. To help ease congestion, the recently opened 8-mile flex lanes system between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point will provide two additional northbound lanes from Wednesday through Saturday. On Sunday, November 30, these lanes will switch to serve southbound travelers. Additionally, the I-17 Improvement Project has expanded the highway to three lanes in each direction between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City.

Despite these improvements, ADOT warns that travelers should be prepared for unexpected events like unscheduled restrictions caused by disabled vehicles or accidents. The department states it is ready to work with law enforcement and first responders to clear incidents quickly.

ADOT recommends drivers start their trips early if possible and avoid peak travel times. Travelers are also encouraged to check tire pressure and engine fluids before departing and ensure they are well-rested before driving. Packing an emergency kit with water, snacks, a flashlight with extra batteries, blankets, warm clothing including gloves, and a first-aid kit is advised in case of delays or emergencies.

Busy conditions are also expected on State Route 87 between Fountain Hills and Payson as well as interstates 8 and 10 between Phoenix or Tucson areas and California.

Over last year’s Thanksgiving weekend, Arizona saw ten fatal crashes resulting in ten deaths across all roads in the state; four of those crashes were alcohol-related according to law enforcement reports.

The ADOT Incident Response Unit (IRU), sponsored by GEICO, will continue patrolling Phoenix-area freeways during extended hours throughout the holiday period. The IRU assists both state troopers and motorists who need help.

Travelers can access real-time information about highway conditions at az511.gov or through the AZ511 app available for Apple and Android devices. Updates are also provided via ADOT’s Twitter/X feed @ArizonaDOT.
