The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) announced on Apr. 8 updates for individual income tax filers, including expected wait times and resources available for the current filing season.

The information is important for Arizona taxpayers who are preparing to file or awaiting their state tax refunds. ADOR emphasized that all returns undergo fraud-detection reviews and accuracy checks before any refunds are issued.

Taxpayers can track the status of their Arizona state tax refund online at AZTaxes.gov/Home/CheckRefund by providing their Social Security Number, filing status, zip code, and the relevant tax year. For those expecting a paper check refund, ADOR said checks are mailed approximately three to five business days after approval, with delivery times depending on USPS services. Taxpayers should check their mailbox after five to six business days.

ADOR noted that while it tries to process refunds in the method requested by taxpayers, there may be situations where a paper check must be issued instead. If additional information is requested from a taxpayer, processing will be delayed until the necessary details are received; it then takes about six more weeks to complete processing.

For individuals owing less than $5,000 in state taxes who cannot pay in full, ADOR offers an option to request a payment plan through its website AZTaxes.gov under the Individual menu by selecting “Request a Payment Plan.” Submitting this request does not immediately generate a plan; taxpayers will receive a confirmation letter with details once processed.

Additionally, ADOR reminded taxpayers that free electronic filing options are available through the Free File Alliance program when accessed directly from azdor.gov. The Call Center remains open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and can be reached locally at (602) 255-3381 for assistance.

ADOR encouraged good recordkeeping habits and advised checking whether documents need to be retained longer for other purposes before discarding them.
